Step 1 — Make sure the garage door is fully closed

Close the door completely before touching the emergency release. When the door is down, the floor carries its weight, so disconnecting the opener changes nothing that is holding it up. A raised or partly raised door is a different situation: it is being held by the springs and, to a small degree, by the opener trolley. How to reconnect your garage door opener after the power returns

On most openers the trolley re-engages by itself the next time the opener runs, once the release mechanism has been reset. Two parts of the statute are often blurred together, so it is worth separating them. Under § 19892(a), the battery backup requirement applies to openers manufactured for sale, sold, offered for sale, or installed in California on or after July 1, 2019 — California generally does not require a homeowner to retrofit an opener that was already installed before that date solely because it lacks a battery backup.
