Genie and Chamberlain are the two big garage door opener brands a homeowner can buy off a store shelf, and that is what makes this match-up different from a pro-line comparison: both are widely sold at retail, both run their own free smart app, and both make belt, chain and wall-mount openers with battery backup. The real differences sit in the details — voice control, cameras, the screw-drive option and which exact models California allows us to install.
Quick answer
Choose Chamberlain if you want a built-in camera (its Secure View line) or the myQ ecosystem with Amazon Key and Walmart+ in-garage delivery. Choose Genie if voice control matters — its Aladdin Connect partner page lists Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri Shortcuts (customized Siri voice commands), none of which Chamberlain Group’s myQ partner article currently lists — or if you want a screw drive. On the basics the brands are evenly matched: quiet DC belt drives, rolling-code remotes, free apps and battery-backup models that meet California law. We install and service both.

Are Genie and Chamberlain the same company?
No. Genie was founded as Alliance Manufacturing in 1954 and has been part of Overhead Door Corporation since 1994. Chamberlain is Chamberlain Group’s retail brand — the same company that makes the professional, dealer-installed LiftMaster line, which is why Chamberlain and LiftMaster share the myQ platform (our LiftMaster vs Chamberlain guide covers that pairing). Genie and Chamberlain share nothing of the sort: separate apps, separate rolling-code systems, and remotes, keypads and parts that are model-specific to each brand.
Where you buy them, and who installs them
Both brands are genuinely retail: Chamberlain sells through big-box stores and its own site, and Genie sells through retail plus a dealer-only Genie Pro line (model numbers ending in “-B” for the battery-backup versions), so a Genie quote from an installer may name a model you will not find in a store. Either brand can be installed DIY where local rules allow, but in California the opener sold or installed must have battery backup, the door must be properly balanced, and safety sensors must be aligned and verified — which is where our garage door opener installation service earns its keep on either badge.
Drive types: belt, chain, screw drive and wall mount

Belt is the quiet flagship on both sides: Genie’s StealthDrive family and Chamberlain’s Ultra-Quiet models are DC belt drives, the usual pick for a bedroom or office over the garage (our belt vs chain guide explains why). Chain is the budget drive: Genie’s Chain Drive 750 (7035) and ChainMax 1000 in its 3022-BC battery-backup configuration, Chamberlain’s C2212T. Screw drive is Genie-only — Chamberlain does not make one — but Genie’s retail MachForce screw drives are listed without battery backup, so in California the screw-drive route runs through Genie Pro’s dealer-only 4164H-B and 4064H-B. Legacy Genie screw drives still need Genie rail lubricant per their manuals; our Genie troubleshooting page covers them. Wall mount exists on both sides, mounted beside the torsion spring to free the ceiling: Genie’s 6172 and Chamberlain’s RJO101, both with battery backup.

Current California-compliant model examples
California has prohibited selling or installing a residential opener without battery backup since July 1, 2019, so this table lists only current models whose official product pages state battery backup is included. It is a set of documented examples, not a stock list — availability varies by model and retailer. Models sold without it — Chamberlain’s B2405, B4505 and C2405, Genie’s SilentMax 750, standard ChainMax 1000 and MachForce 4062/4063 — stay in each maker’s national catalog but are not offered or installed as-is in California.

Every specification above comes from the model’s own official product page, checked the day this guide was written; the warranty comparison has its own table below, built from each model’s official warranty document.
Smart control: Aladdin Connect vs myQ
Both apps are free and cover the essentials — open and close remotely, alerts, schedules, shared access. The differences that matter, per each manufacturer’s own pages:
| Feature | Aladdin Connect (Genie) | myQ (Chamberlain) |
|---|---|---|
| Voice control | Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri Shortcuts (customized Siri voice commands), per Genie’s partner page | None listed; Chamberlain Group’s partner article shows Google Home and SmartThings as unsupported and says myQ cannot be controlled from Apple Home or Siri |
| In-garage delivery | Amazon Key | Amazon Key and Walmart+ InHome |
| Home platforms | SmartThings, Ring, Alarm.com, Control4, Home Assistant, Crestron, Resideo | Ring, Vivint, Alarm.com, Resideo, Control4, Crestron |
| Vehicle integration | HomeLink pairing by opener and vehicle generation | In-dash myQ control in select Tesla, Kia, Honda, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen models |
| Camera video | No built-in-camera models found | Live view free on Secure View models; saving event video is a paid subscription |
| Retrofit for an existing opener | Aladdin Connect retrofit kit: compatible sectional-door openers made after 1993 | myQ Smart Garage Control: openers made after 1993 with a learn button, safety sensors and a sectional door — including Genie Intellicode openers from 1996 onward, some marked “may be compatible” |
Partner lists change; check the linked pages before you buy. The practical read: Genie is the pick if you talk to your garage, Chamberlain if you watch it or want deliveries left inside — and wanting myQ does not rule out Genie, because the external Smart Garage Control adds myQ to compatible Genie units. Our smart garage door opener guide goes deeper, and our myQ connectivity page covers the app’s common issues.
Battery backup and California’s requirement
Since July 1, 2019, California law (Senate Bill 969, Health and Safety Code section 19892) has prohibited selling, offering for sale or installing a residential automatic garage door opener without a battery-backup function; a replacement door cannot be connected to a non-compliant opener, and openers already in service need not be retrofitted. Both brands sell battery-backup models, so the law does not favor either — it just narrows the shopping list to the table above. Our California garage door requirements guide covers the rest of the state rules.
Security, remotes, keypads and HomeLink
Both brands use rolling-code remotes that change the code on every press: Genie calls its system Intellicode; Chamberlain’s current models list Security+ 2.0 on their product pages. Neither maker publishes a comparison claiming one system outperforms the other, so rolling-code branding alone is not a reason to pick a side. Accessories are where you feel the difference: Chamberlain remotes and keypads pair with Security+ openers, Genie-branded accessories pair with Intellicode openers, and the two do not cross over — though Genie’s Universal Series remotes and keypads are designed to work across several manufacturers once compatibility is confirmed by model. HomeLink in-car buttons can pair with both brands; success depends on the opener and the vehicle’s HomeLink generation.
Noise, lighting and cameras
Noise. Neither maker publishes sound ratings, and both belt flagships are DC drives with soft start and stop, so we do not call one brand quieter; both position belt as their quieter drive over chain.
Lighting. A model-level spec: Chamberlain’s B6713T and its Secure View models carry a 2,000-lumen motion-activated LED and the B4613T a 1,000-lumen LED, per their product pages; the C2212T uses a bulb (sold separately). On the Genie side, the 6172 wall mount is LED-lit. Other models vary by SKU.
Cameras. The clearest Chamberlain advantage in this match-up: the Secure View B6755T carries a built-in 1080p, 130-degree camera with two-way audio and live view in the myQ app (saved event video needs the paid plan). We found no built-in-camera model on Genie’s residential lineup page.
Warranty comparison
Both makers publish model-specific terms — Genie in its warranty documents and product pages, Chamberlain on some product pages and in each model’s official manual — and they differ more by model than by brand:
| Model | Motor | Drive | Parts | Accessories | Battery |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Genie 7155 | Limited lifetime (motor and gearbox) | Belt: limited lifetime | 5 years | 1 year | 1 year |
| Genie 7055 | Limited lifetime (motor and gearbox) | Belt: limited lifetime | 5 years | 1 year | 1 year |
| Genie 7035 | Limited lifetime | Chain: 5 years | 5 years | 1 year | 1 year |
| Genie 3022-BC | Limited lifetime (motor and gearbox) | Chain: 15 years | 5 years | 1 year | Not stated |
| Genie 6172 | 15 years (motor and gearbox) | Not applicable | 5 years (core parts) | 1 year | 1 year |
| Chamberlain B4613T | Lifetime | Belt: lifetime | 5 years | 1 year | 1 year |
| Chamberlain B6713T | Lifetime | Belt: lifetime | 5 years | 1 year | 1 year |
| Chamberlain B6755T | Lifetime | Belt: lifetime | 5 years | 1 year | 1 year |
| Chamberlain C2212T | 6 years | Chain: 1 year | 1 year | 1 year | Not verified |
| Chamberlain RJO101 | Lifetime | Not applicable | 5 years | 1 year | 1 year |
Extras where stated: Chamberlain covers the integrated LED for 5 years on the B4613T, B6713T and B6755T and the B6755T’s camera for 1 year. The pattern worth noticing: on belt drives the two brands’ terms are close, but on chain drives Genie’s published terms run longer than the C2212T’s. Both cover the first retail purchaser at the original residence and exclude labor and door hardware; manufacturer materials can differ by SKU or purchase date, and the warranty supplied with the purchased unit controls.
What each costs installed in Orange County
Installed price tracks the drive type and features — camera, wall mount, smart control — more than the badge on the box, and in California every quote is for a battery-backup model. Current itemized ranges are on our opener installation cost page; every quote is written before work starts.
Which should you choose?
- Bedroom or office above the garage: a compliant belt drive from either brand — Genie 7155 or 7055, Chamberlain B4613T, B6713T or a Secure View model.
- Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri Shortcuts voice control: Genie with Aladdin Connect.
- A camera watching the garage, or in-garage deliveries: Chamberlain — the Secure View B6755T for the camera, myQ for Amazon Key and Walmart+ InHome.
- High ceiling, storage racks or a car lift: a wall mount from either brand — Genie 6172 or Chamberlain RJO101 — subject to your torsion-spring setup. A screw drive means Genie, through the dealer-only Pro battery-backup models.
- Detached garage or lowest workable price: a battery-backup chain drive — Genie 3022-BC or 7035, or Chamberlain C2212T.
Whichever way you lean, sizing, safety-sensor alignment, battery-backup setup and app pairing are part of our garage door opener installation, and our opener repair service covers both brands afterwards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Genie and Chamberlain made by the same company?
No. Genie belongs to Overhead Door Corporation; Chamberlain is Chamberlain Group’s retail brand, sister to the professional LiftMaster line. The two brands run separate apps (Aladdin Connect vs myQ), separate rolling-code systems (Intellicode vs Security+ 2.0) and brand-specific remotes and parts.
Which brand works with Alexa and Google Assistant?
Genie: its Aladdin Connect partner page lists Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri Shortcuts for customized voice commands. Chamberlain Group’s myQ partner article lists none of the major voice assistants, shows Google Home and SmartThings as unsupported, and says myQ cannot be controlled from Apple Home or Siri. Partner lists change, so verify on the manufacturer’s page before you buy.
Which has a built-in camera?
Chamberlain. Its Secure View B6755T belt drive includes a 1080p camera with live view in the myQ app; saving event video requires the paid video subscription. We found no built-in-camera model on Genie’s residential lineup page, so a camera on the Genie side means adding a separate garage camera.
Can Genie and Chamberlain openers share remotes or apps?
Not natively. Genie remotes pair with Intellicode openers and Chamberlain remotes with Security+ openers, and each brand runs its own app. Two crossovers exist: Genie’s Universal Series remotes and keypads are designed to work across several manufacturers once compatibility is confirmed by model, and the external myQ Smart Garage Control can add myQ control to Genie Intellicode openers made from 1996 onward, per Chamberlain Group’s compatibility list.
Which models meet California’s battery-backup law?
Since July 1, 2019 California has prohibited selling or installing a residential opener without battery backup. Compliant current models include Genie’s 7155, 7055, 7035, 3022-BC and 6172, and Chamberlain’s B4613T, B6713T, B6755T, C2212T and RJO101. Models sold without the battery are not installed as-is in California.
