Problem

The torsion spring above the door had snapped, leaving a clear gap on the shaft. The door was far too heavy to lift by hand and unsafe to operate.

Solution

Our technician removed both worn springs, installed a new high-cycle torsion spring, checked the cables, drums and bearings, then balanced the door and ran a full safety test.

Final Result

The door opens and closes smoothly and quietly again, balanced at every height and backed by a parts-and-labor warranty.

What Happened?

This Laguna Niguel homeowner woke up to a garage door that would not budge. The opener hummed, the door shuddered an inch off the floor and stopped. When our technician pulled the door open manually and looked up at the torsion shaft, the cause was obvious in the first photo below: the galvanized torsion spring had snapped clean through, leaving a finger-wide gap between the two halves of the coil. A broken spring is not a partial failure. The spring carries essentially the entire weight of the door, so once it lets go the opener is trying to lift a couple of hundred pounds of steel on a motor rated for a few dozen. Both springs on this door were original and showed the same dull, stretched coils near the cones, so replacing only the broken one would have meant a second service call within months.

Work Performed

  • Released tension and removed both worn galvanized torsion springs
  • Installed a new black powder-coated high-cycle torsion spring sized to the door
  • Inspected the cables, drums, bearing plate and center bracket on the shaft
  • Wound the spring to spec and rebalanced the door so it holds at any height
  • Reset the opener travel and force limits and tested the auto-reverse safety
  • Lubricated rollers, hinges and bearings and completed a full safety inspection

Final Result

  • Broken spring replaced the same day, with no return visit needed
  • Door lifts easily by hand and holds position at every height
  • New high-cycle spring rated well beyond the original builder-grade part
  • Opener no longer straining, which protects the motor and gear assembly
  • Backed by our parts and labor warranty

Customer Outcome

The homeowner went from a garage they could not get into that morning to a door that opens and closes quietly on the first press of the remote, all inside one appointment. The difference is easy to see in the before and after photos at the top of this page: a bare, fractured spring on the shaft, replaced by a new black powder-coated spring seated tight against the center bracket. Rebalancing the door also took the load off an opener that had been fighting the weight, which is usually what saves a customer the far larger cost of an opener replacement a year or two later.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does broken spring replacement cost in Laguna Niguel?
A single torsion spring replacement in Laguna Niguel generally runs about $200 to $350, and doing both springs on a double door usually lands between $300 and $500 depending on the wire size and cycle rating. You get an exact price before the work starts.
Should I replace one spring or both?
If your door has two springs and one has broken, the second is almost always the same age with the same number of cycles on it. Replacing both at once costs far less than a second service call, which is exactly what we did on this Laguna Niguel job.
Is it safe to use the door with a broken spring?
No. With the spring broken, the opener is lifting the full weight of the door, which can burn out the motor, and a hand-lifted door can drop without warning. Leave the door closed and call a technician.
What is a high-cycle spring?
A standard builder-grade spring is rated for roughly 10,000 open-close cycles. High-cycle springs use heavier wire and longer coils and are rated for two to four times that, which matters on a door used several times a day.
Do you offer same-day spring replacement in Laguna Niguel?
Yes. Common torsion springs are stocked on our trucks, and same-day service covers Laguna Niguel and the rest of Orange County, including weekends.
